Whim Nursing

Why do you nurse your child?

You've probably heard the phrase feeding on demand… but I much prefer responsive feeding, because responsive feeding works both ways.

Breastfeeding isn't just about responding to your child's need for milk. Sometimes it's about responding to your need in that moment too. A cuddle, a connection, a reset, a chance to make a tricky situation just that little bit easier.

I came across this image from the wider La Leche League community and thought it was brilliant. It’s not a term I’d seen before, but it really resonated with me. It's a lovely reminder that we still have autonomy in early parenthood, and breastfeeding can be one of the many tools in our parenting toolkit.

I feed my 2 year old for all kinds of reasons, not just because she asks for it! We recently got a new kitten, called Griffin (who will no doubt make an appearance on the page at some point). Bridget has been very excited about this, at the top of her lungs, which was scaring the cat, so I put her on the boob. Bridget got some time to calm down, everyone got a break from the screeching, everyone wins 🙂 I’ve also fed during and after vaccinations and medical appointments, which has been incredibly helpful.

Chloe said: When Henry was between 18 months and 2½, he hated having his hair cut. At the barbers, I just started feeding him so the barber could do what he needed to do without it being a traumatic experience for everyone. The barber thought it was a great idea!

Responsive feeding doesn't have to follow a schedule. Sometimes it's about hunger. Sometimes it's about comfort. Sometimes it's simply because it helps.

If you'd like to read more about responsive feeding and the natural rhythms of breastfeeding, this La Leche League article is a great place to start.

We look forward to hearing your nursing stories!
